we rented a car for a few days to drive south through the french countryside and our first stop was the tidal island of mont saint-michel on the northern coast of normandy.
the island has a population of 41 people and a monastic abbey that once served as a prison which housed, among other prisoners, a man who had claimed to be the estranged son of louis XVII and heir to the throne of france
the lower streets of mont saint-michel are lined with tourist shops
